Uhuru Approves New Law to 'Save' Diaspora Prisoners

President Uhuru Kenyatta on Thursday assented into law the Transfer of Prisoners Act, which will see Kenyans convicted of criminal offences outside the country serve their terms at home.

The new law is aimed at allowing the transfer of prisoners between Kenya and countries it is in agreement with, so that prisoners serve their sentences in their countries of birth.

The Prisoner Transfer law would also be helpful especially if the home country feels the sentence was unfair.

The newly signed law that was sponsored by Majority Leader Aden Duale as a bill in parliament, earlier this year, also advocates for the relocation of arrested foreigners to be tried in their countries.

The law also allows Kenyans suffering from mental illness transferred home to receive a fair trial.
