Uhuru Leaves Kenya After Signing Election Laws

President Uhuru Kenyatta jetted out of the country on Monday night, at around 10.25pm, moments after signing the controversial Election Laws (Amendment) Bill 2016 into law.

In a statement sent to newsrooms, Mr Kenyatta divulged that he was headed to India for a two-day State visit to reciprocate the historic visit to Kenya by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi last year.

During his visit, President Kenyatta will attend the inauguration of the 8th Vibrant Gujarat Global Summit 2017, as the Guest of Honor. The central focus of the Summit attended by other high profile leaders across the globe will be 'Sustainable Economic and Social Development'.

He is also expected to hold bilateral talks with both Prime Minister Modi and President Pranab Mukherjee among other top Indian Government officials.

The main areas of the bilateral talks will include; collaboration in trade, healthcare, manufacturing, security, defence and information, communication and technology.

His night departure was prompted by the fact that he spent the better part of the day at the burial of former Nominated MP Mark Too in Kapasaret, Uasin Gishu County.

Kenyans have expressed varied opinions after Kenyatta passed the disputed laws which may lead to mass demonstrations as announced by the CORD Coalition.

The new laws allow the electoral body to put in place a complimentary mechanism for identification of voters and transmission of elections results if the electronic voting fails in the General Election.

The law further demands MPs and Members of County Assemblies (MCAs) to have a degree from a recognised university before they can seek being elected into office.
