VIDEO: Villagers Climb Trees to See First-ever Graduate

Residents of Lengobei Village in Kajiado County climbed trees on Saturday to have a glimpse of a man whom they claimed was the first in the area, to attain Masters Degree since independence.

Joel Siamito, who arrived in the area donned in a graduation gown, is said to have broken education standards ever seen in the area, which is largely marred by high illiteracy levels.

The 30-year-old had graduated from Tangaza University with a degree of Masters in Business Administration.

In recognition of Siamito's good performance, local leaders set up a ceremony where they praised the Masters Graduate for setting a high standard and being a good role model to the youth in the area.

Led by Magadi Member of County Assembly (MCA), area leaders commented that such achievements should also be extended to girls.

“We need the government to construct more dormitories so that the girls can also access education without frequent interruption,” suggested Magadi MCA Peter Pariken.

Local activists also expressed their concerns over retrogressive cultures that have thwarted the progress in the area.

According to Mary Lai, an actvist of girl child education, the community should do away with some cultures to promote education and reduce poverty in the area.

“The moment we abolish FGM we will realise a girls education up to the highest levels, as the practice turns girls to women automatically,” stated Lai.
