Why your Sim Card Could Soon be Deactivated

Safaricom and Airtel have issued a warning to their customers asking them to register their sim cards afresh within the next 27 days or face de-activation.

The notice came after reports indicated that details used to register some subscribers' mobile numbers, did not match those at the Integrated Population Registration System.

The two telecommunication service companies have been sending messages to the affected subscribers, urging them to confirm their registration details or visit their shops with original Identification cards (ID) and a copy to re-register.

Communications Authority of Kenya (CA) revised the rules for sim card registration in mid September, instructing mobile service providers to ensure that all their network lines were registered.

Safaricom’s Corporate Affairs Director Stephen Chege, advised those who had received the alert messages to promptly comply.

“For a small number of subscribers who have received the message, it means that there is some information that we do not have which we need to obtain in order to have their full details on record,” Chege was quoted by the Business Daily.
