Woman Buried For Third Time After Months of Dowry Row

A dowry row that went on for months and saw the exhumation of a woman’s body twice, finally came to an end in Gachaviri village, Mbeere South sub-county, Embu County.

Lillian Chepkorir Tonui was finally laid to rest after her family and her in-laws agreed to settle the dowry later.

The former teacher, in her death, has been at the center of controversy between her family and in-laws after it was established that her husband's family had not paid the full amount requested by her parents in dowry.

The Standard reports that Chepkorir was married to Elias Mwangangi Njogu, for the past nine years but they had reportedly not concluded traditional rituals.

After she died, she was buried in her matrimonial home in Embu. Her family in Kericho however went to court to protest and her body had to be exhumed.

According to The Nation, the second burial was in Kericho but her in-laws also went to court, and the body was exhumed a second time.

After months of arguing, the two families finally came to an agreement and Chepkorir was laid to rest for the final time at her matrimonial home in Embu.

The burial was attended by representatives from both families who agreed to bury the hatchet along with their loved one.
