Woman Killed In City Matatu on Her Birthday

A 25-year-old woman was shot dead inside a matatu in Umoja Estate, Nairobi, after she failed to heed to the demands of a robber who posed as a passenger.

Mercy Atieno was reportedly shot at close range on Saturday night, after confronting a man who attempted to make away with her phone. An accomplice to the thug stood from the next seat and shot the woman, killing her on the spot.

Speaking to Nairobi News, the family members expressed their devastation saying that it was Ms Atieno's birthday and she was travelling with her niece when the tragic incident occurred in a bus registered under Umoinner Sacco.

"We have lost a very dear member of our family. Mercy was a brilliant young lady who was a beckon of hope in our family. We are devastated for losing our last born sister under such gruesome circumstances,” said the deceased's elder brother who sought anonymity.

Ms Atieno was allegedly the third victim of crime in the estate within the past two weeks.

On December 9 this year, a man's body was found dumped at a construction site in Umoja-Innercore with a rope tied around the neck. Police disputed suicide claims since the state of the body suggested otherwise.

On Saturday, an armed gang of four raided Skymart Supermarket and JJ butchery, which are adjacent to each other, stealing goods of an unknown value.

Police are yet to comment on the series of criminal incidents in the area.
