Uhuru Directs Unroadworthy Vehicles be Removed From Roads

President Uhuru Kenyatta has directed all police officers to ensure that traffic rules are strictly observed to avoid frequent road accidents.

Kenyatta was speaking after a Friday evening accident at Kiengu Market in Meru County in which 14 people died and several others injured.

In a statement sent by his communications team, President Kenyatta also directed all unroadworthy vehicles be removed from the roads to minimise carnage.

The Head of State who is on a tour of Nakuru county also sent a message of condolence and encouragement to the families, relatives and friends of those who lost their lives in the incident.

“My thoughts and prayers are with the families, relatives and friends of those who perished in the Friday accident. May the Almighty God give them the strength and grace to bear the tragic loss,” he stated.

Kenyatta expressed his sorrow for the loss of innocent lives and at the same time wished quick recovery to those who sustained injuries.

The accident occurred when a lorry travelling from Garbatulla to Maua lost control and rammed into four other vehicles which had been parked by the roadside.

According to Garbatulla Deputy County Commissioner Kipchumba Rutto, the truck's brakes seemingly failed before it hit four Toyota Proboxes.
