The Retailers Traders Association of Kenya has announced that eco-friendly shopping bags will cost shoppers, in the least, Sh3 in Kenyan supermarkets.
The Association, which welcomed the Government's ban, said that consumers will have the new bags beginning Tuesday.
"We want to save the environment for our future, so we support the ban on plastic bags," a statement by the Association read in part.
Participating supermarkets include; Naivas, Mulleys, Tuskys, Chandarana, Nakumatt, Carrefour, Cleanshelf, Saltes, QuickMart, Budget, Uchumi, EastMatt, Choppies and Tumaini.
Business Retrak Director and Naivas Chief Operations Officer Willy Kimani explained that the amount has been subsidized.
"The bags will cost us between Sh5 to Sh10 more (per bag) than what we use. We are subsidizing the cost for the benefit of the consumer," Kimani explained.
Consumers will be allowed to walk into the supermarkets with their own bags or purchase other bags at the cost of Sh30 and Sh50.
Environment Cabinet Secretary Judi Wakhungu gazetted the notice on plastic ban on February 28, 2017.
