20 People Committed Suicide in Nakuru - Report Reveals

20 people are reported to have committed suicide in Nakuru County in the month of August.

The cases have been reported in Molo and Kuresoi with a majority of the victims being young people.

Reports from medical facilities in the two sub-counties indicate that most of the youth killed themselves by hanging themselves, ingesting harmful substances or jumping into dams and manholes.

Dr Florence Wairimu, who is a medic at St. Joseph’s Nursery and Maternity Home in Molo, attributed the disturbing trend to negative social influences in the young people lives.

“The suicide cases are mostly caused by unemployment, drug, abuse and financial problems,” she elaborated.

She added that a majority of those affected are between the ages of 25 and 35 years.

Earlier on, it was reported that a tree along the Nyeri-Nanyuki Highway had become synonymous with suicide deaths after 26 people reportedly hang themselves on the tree.

The tree located in Nyeri's Kiganjo Forest is commonly referred to as "Muthigi" by locals who have witnessed the tragic deaths in a span of seven years.

"Since 2010, I have seen at least 26 bodies of people who hanged themselves here.

"People come from different places to end their lives here. There is another tree a few meters from here where some hang themselves," Ms Francisca Kirigo told the Daily Nation.
