Dedan Kimathi University of Technology Introduces Golf

Dedan Kimathi University of Technology (DeKUT) in Nyeri County became the first public university in Kenya to introduce golf as a sport.

The golf range was officially opened on Monday, October 22, by the university’s Vice-Chancellor Prof. P. N. Kioni who lead the tee off after which students took turns.

The development was as a result of the good relationship the school enjoyed with Nyeri Golf Club which is one of the largest in the country.

Students of the DeKUT golf club will enjoy unrestricted access to Nyeri Golf Course to train.

For Sammy Kimenyi, a student who was visibly excited, the launch of the sport in the institution was a dream come true

The learning institution looked forward to partnering with Kenya Golf Union to further expose students and transform them into professional golfers.

Stella Mwangi, the coach, mentioned that there was a shortage of young golfers and commended the University for starting the sport to benefit students. She then expressed her commitment to coach the students on the sport.

The Nyeri Golf Club Captain, George Kiguta, expressed his commitment and that of his fellow golfers to supporting DeKUT Club in all ways possible.

Also present at the launch was Dickson Mwangi, who was representing the Chairman of the Kenya Golf Union.

Faith Mutheu from the university’s Public Relations office mentioned to Kenyans.co.ke that the sport was a great opportunity and that they were committed to making efforts towards the holistic development of students coming to the institution.
