One person has died and seven others hospitalised following a cholera outbreak at The Nairobi hospital in the Kenyan capital.

The victims are alleged to be members staff at the hospital's catering department. According to reports, they worked in the health centre's kitchen.

It is alleged that the staff were admitted on Monday evening and one succumbed to the disease on Tuesday morning.

Sources disclosed to the Daily Nation that at least 23 cases of cholera had been reported at the hospital during the month of April.

The report also indicated that the hospital's cafeteria had since been closed for an unspecified period of time due to the situation.

“The hospital has been handling cholera cases day in day out but now there is an outbreak and the staff are affected. We are treating it seriously. The investigation is on,” a source revealed to the Daily Nation.

On their part, the hospital has acknowledged that there were patients infected by the disease but maintained that there is no outbreak at the hospital.

"Unfortunately we had 8 staff affected. There is no outbreak of cholera in the Nairobi hospital," an excerpt of their statement asserted.

In an update posted on their Twitter page, the hospital stated that no patient was at risk as they were continuously monitoring the situation.
