UPDATE: A statement from Kilifi Governor revealed that the death toll following the grisly accident has risen to 15.
"Latest report from the Kilifi Hospital confirm 15 people dead following a tragic accident along the Mombasa- Malindi highway. According to Kilifi hospital Medical Superintendent Dr. Eddy Nzomo," reads the statement sent out by the governor.
He further disclosed that 13 people died on the spot, while two others died while undergoing emergency treatment. Adding that three people survived the accident with one in critical condition, and that arrangements were being made to transfer them to Mombasa General Hospital.
A horrific road accident involving a 14-seater matatu and lorry along the Mombasa-Malindi highway on Sunday evening, March 15, left several dead and others fighting for their lives after sustaining serious injuries.
According to Coast regional police boss, Rashid Yakub, the matatu was heading to Mombasa from Malindi when it collided head-on with the oncoming lorry at around 6:00 p.m.
The police boss went on to reveal that the grisly accident occurred at Tororo in Kilifi South.
The latest reports by the Daily Nation, state that the death toll has now doubled with more than 14 feared to have lost their lives.
The latest figures were back by the Kilifi Hospital Medical Superintendent, Eddy Nzomo, who received the 3 survivors (reported to be in critical condition) from the crash at the government hospital.
