BBC's Larry Madowo made his return to TV on Tuesday, July 28, one year after taking a sabbatical from his position as Business Editor at BBC Africa.

Madowo had left the BBC's East Africa Bureau in Nairobi for Columbia University in New York to study Business and Economics, being one of the beneficiaries of the prestigious Knight-Bagehot Fellowship.

Following completion of the post-graduate program in May, Madowo resumed work with the BBC, taking up a new position as a United States (US) correspondent for the broadcaster.

His first feature for BBC following his return was scheduled to air on Tuesday, July 28, and takes viewers inside an Intensive Care Unit (ICU) facility hosting Covid-19 patients in the United States.

Madowo's announcement of his return was met with excited responses from several Kenyans who wished him the best.

Besides successfully completing the program at Columbia, Madowo was also the recipient of the 2020 Philip Greer Award for Financial Writing thanks to his 9,000-word thesis exploring the aftermath of e-commerce firm, Jumia's listing on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) in April 2019.

He is expected to co-author an MBA case study on the same topic at Columbia Business School.

The journalist became one of the most recognisable figures in Kenya during his stint at NTV as host of the Friday night show The Trend.

He announced his exit from Nation Media Group (NMG) in March 2018 at a time when the company was under fire over alleged state influence in editorial decisions, a situation that saw several columnists leave the organisation.

Other than The Trend, Madowo had taken up multiple roles at NMG as he also hosted a radio show on Nation FM and wrote a weekly column in the Daily Nation.

He then joined the BBC as the broadcaster ramped up its presence in Africa with a new East Africa bureau. Several journalists were hired from Kenyan stations in the months that followed as BBC looked to produce more local news content.

The celebrated journalist began his career in journalism a year after joining Daystar University in 2006, taking up an internship at KTN before his move to NTV. He also had stints at CNBC and Bahasha FM in the early days of his career.
