Kenya Defense Forces (KDF) has unveiled a new sergeant, tasked with instilling discipline in the entire Kenyan Army.
KDF unveiled Army Sergeant Major WOI Samson Kariuki at an event held at their Headquarters in Kenya Army’s Ngao Gardens on Friday, September 3.
The position of the Army Sergeant Major is the highest-ranked, non-commissioned officer who is charged with the key responsibility of ensuring discipline among the soldiers.
In the position, Kariuki is also expected to be the link between the Commander of the Kenya Army and the troops.
While welcoming the new ASM Kariuki to Headquarters of Kenya Army to take up the position, Commander Kenya Army Lieutenant General Walter Koipaton reiterated the importance of working together with the other KDF Sergeant Majors for the betterment of the Service.
Kariuki takes over from Retiring Army Sergeant Major (ASM) Warrant Officer Class One (WOI) Hamud Abdallah Said.
Hamud retired after being in the army for a period of 42 years. He joined KDF in 1979 and rose through the ranks until he was appointed as the ASM in the year 2019.
In his message to the soldiers who attended the event, Hamud stated they should continue embracing the highest levels of discipline while carrying out their duties.
Other soldiers who attended the event include, AMISOM Force Commander Designate Lieutenant General Albert Kendagor, the General Officer Commanding Eastern Command Major General Ayub Matiiri, Senior Officers, Officers, Defence Forces Sergeant Major WOI Elijah Koranga, Kenya Air Force Sergeant Major WOI Dennis Talengo, Kenya Navy Sergeant Major WOI Haji Mbwana, Kenya Army soldiers, retired soldiers, and the retiring ASM’s family.
The Ministry of Defense is currently headed by Cabinet Secretary Monica Juma. The position of the Chief of the Defence Forces (CDF) is currently held by Robert Kibochi, who is the head of the entire army unit.
Kibochi also advises the President, who is Commander–in–Chief, on military matters. Apart from that, he gives control direction and general superintendence of the Defence Forces.
