The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has announced that it will close a section of Uhuru Highway for nine days beginning Thursday, March 28, at midnight.

In a statement shared on Thursday afternoon, the authority explained that the closure will affect Mombasa Road-bound traffic.

The closure will take place between Hotel Boulevard and the University of Nairobi roundabout to pave the way for the construction of a tunnel linking the University of Nairobi'a main campus and the Chiromo Campus.

"The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) wishes to notify the Public that there will be a temporary closure of Uhuru Highway (A8) between Hotel Boulevard and the University of Nairobi roundabout (Mombasa Bound) from 11.59 pm on Thursday, March 28, 2024, to 11.59 pm on Saturday, April 6, 2024," read the notice in part.

The authority, therefore, advised motorists accessing Uhuru Highway (A8) from Westlands and Thika Road to use alternative routes.

The alternative routes include Harry Thuku Road, University Way, Prof. Wangari Mathai Road, and Kipande Road.

The authority further asked drivers to take caution while approaching the affected sections.

Also, the motorists were advised to follow traffic signs and guidance that the authority will put in place. The police and traffic marshall will also be deployed on the site.

Since January, the University of Nairobi students have lamented the government's desertion of the tunnel forcing them to dodge speeding vehicles when crossing the road.

According to them, the tunnel which runs under the expressway, was damaged during the construction of the expressway.

The construction damaged the drainage system leading to stagnant water.

At the tail-end of January, KeNHA announced that plans to renovate the tunnel which was littered with trash and stagnant water was underway.
