“Morris. Do you take Susan as your lawfully wedded wife? To love and to hold. To care for and to cherish,” the ACK cleric asked after Susan had taken her vows.
I looked at the entire garden, packed to the brim. I saw Susan smile. Her trademark smile. I remember the first time I saw her smile, lips glowing in her favourite lipstick as I pressed on the lift to wait, one year ago, at a church workshop.
“Thank you,” she said.
“You welcome. I can hold that lift whenever you are late for service,” I giggled. She laughed and asked me to hold her handbag as she changed from her sneakers to black stilettos.
“Hmm, shoe number 6,” I said as I stared at her stilettos. “9 more digits and I’d have your phone number,” I added. And that’s how we started.
I love her heart, her personality and her vibe. So, “Yes, I do,” I answered to the delight of the audience.
“It’s now time to kiss the bride,” the cleric added. Hmm…
If you’ve ever been married, you know how the process flows. From the engagement to the ruracio and the nuptials.
Then the honeymoon. I bet this is the bridegroom’s time to revel in love and bliss. My brother and I joke that the wedding is for the bride, but the bill, hmm, is for the groom. If you know you know.
As for the wedding, I found myself shining in a maroon tuxedo, I colour I typically can’t stand, but it was Susan’s special day and she was delighted by how amazing I looked inside it.
“You look adorable husband,” she whispered in my ears as she hid our marriage certificate inside my suit.
But it was during the reception that we teetered on the verge of breaking our parents' hearts.
“I can’t believe it!” my mother stated after I whispered to her that she be cautious about revealing our honeymoon destination too quickly.
“But I thought you already booked the flights and even paid for the resort?” her father added as the best man moved in to curb what had started to appear like a light argument.
“We are going for the honeymoon paps, but we changed our mind for an affordable location, and we planned on saving the rest of the amount,” I explained.
“Son, it's our tradition to go for honeymoon outside Kenya to the beaches,” my father added, surprised but not angry.
However, both our parents are masters of disguise. They let it slide under the carpet but while we were having our meal, he asked me to elaborate.
“Dad, we discovered the convenience of comprehensive insurance services through Co-op Bancassurance intermediary.
“As a fully-fledged subsidiary, Co-op Bank offers an extensive range of insurance products, leveraging partnerships with reputable insurers in the industry. We cancelled our one-month honeymoon to insure some products and we will go spend our time together for two days only at the Coast,” I added.
He looked at Susan and wondered. “Are you sure about this? How did he convince you?” He asked.
That was a trick question. The question ought to have been, “Was it your idea Sussan?”
“It was his idea and I loved it. We visited a Co-op Bank branch and found out that with Co-op Bancassurance Intermediary's network of Insurance Partners, issue zote ni less.No worries.
“You can access a wide range of insurance covers through all Co-op Bank branches. All you need to do is get professional insurance advisory services provided by their qualified team.
“You can insure motor products, non-motor products, agriculture and businesses. You can access medical insurance, pension both for groups and individuals and even life products with a focus on education policies,” she added.
They say before you marry a person, you should first make them use a computer with slow internet to see who they really are. Susan had learnt to be patient with my parents and I witnessed how she made the old man calm down.
For us, we chose a life cover, SOMA NA CO-OP, an education policy that enables the policyholder to save towards the future education of their child or dependant. Sussan and I planned to have two kids and we started to save for them by saving the deposit and then adding monthly premiums.
My father smiled and wished us well on our two ‘get together’. I wish they knew how much fun we planned to have, and then use the remaining days to go on road trips, sleep at home, spend some nights in different hotels listening to bands, go to theatre plays and watch local sports teams compete.
