The Commission for University Education has ordered 10 varsity branches in the Western region to close down in 90 days, over failure to meet the required standards.
The order was given after branches of Kisii University in Eldoret, Nyamira, Kabarnet, Migori, Keroka, Kehancha, Kapenguria among others fell short of the higher learning threshold.
“The commission is, therefore, considering auditing all the systems of Kisii University to ensure quality in the delivery of university education,” read a report presented to Education Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiangi by the Commission.
In September, the Kenyan Council of Legal Education ruled out law programmes in several institutions including Moi University's Annex Campus.
The Council directed the schools not to admit more students since they did not meet the required standards to teach Law.

The decision caused an uproar among University students and graduates from the affected institutions, with some seeking redress in court.
