Data from the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has revealed Nairobi roads that have recorded the highest number of accident fatalities this year.

According to the data accessed by Kenyans.co.ke, Thika Road led with the highest fatalities with 13 deaths reported between January to April.

Thika Road was followed by Kangundo Road, Mombasa Road and Outering Road where 12 fatalities were recorded on each road.

Waiyaki Way on the other hand was ranked fifth with 10 fatalities.

NTSA data also revealed that Eastern Bypass, Juja Road, Ngong Road and Northern Bypass were among the most dangerous roads this year with seven fatalities recorded on the roads.

Conversely, the roads with the least fatalities during the review period were; Temple Road, Third Parklands Avenue, Uyoma Street, Valley Road, Waithaka Cresent Road,  Wanyie Road and Yusuf Haji Avenue. Each road recorded a single fatality.    

Zimmerman Road, Rapta Road and Haile Selassie also had one fatality each.

Fatalities by Road Users & Types of Vehicles

As highlighted in the report, pedestrians were the most affected in the accidents for quarter one. NTSA reported that 89 out of the 176 deaths involved pedestrians.

Motorcyclists also lead in the number of fatalities with 34 deaths reported during that period.

Other figures were as follows; passenger (20), drivers (12), pillion passenger (12) and pedal cyclist (9).

On the other hand, most fatalities in Nairobi involved private vehicles (40) and Public Service Vehicles (PSVs - 38).

Accidents involving commercial vehicles also had a high number of fatalities at 30 while fatalities attributed to accidents involving motorcycles put at 25.

Other data for vehicles were as follows; government vehicles at (3) and bicycles at (1).

Causes of Accidents

Among the leading causes of accidents in the country were vehicles losing control and road users' failure to keep to the near side or the proper traffic lane.

Other causes were overtaking improperly, misjudging the distance or speed of vehicles, and error of judgment or negligence.
