Nairobi County has announced a 100 per cent waiver on all penalties and interests relating to land rates.
The announcement was made through a gazette notice published on Friday, May 17 by the Nairobi City County Executive Committee Member for Finance and Economic Planning, Charles Kerich.
However, the county noted that landowners have to make the payments between May 20, 2024, to June 20, 2024, in order to benefit from the waiver.
Additionally, Sakaja's administration indicated that the waiver would be enjoyed by those who make full payments.
"Notice is given that the County Executive Committee Member for Finance and Economic Planning in the exercise of powers conferred by section 5 (2) (b) of the Nairobi City County Tax Waivers Administration Act, 2013 and with the concurrence of the Governor shall grant 100% waiver on penalties and interest on Land Rates for those who will pay such Land Rates in full within the period of the May 20 to June 10, 2024," read the statement in part.
The latest move by the county is part of the Sakaja's strategy to raise revenue to fund activities of the county.
On the other hand, the county is far from reaching its target collection for land rates in the 2023/2024 financial year.
As detailed in the Nairobi City County Revenue and Expenditure Report for the Period Ended March 32, 2024, the county had collected Ksh2.6 billion in land rates.
The county set a target of Ksh7 billion for the financial year. Therefore, Sakaja and his team fell short of the target by over Ksh4.4 billion.
Land rates within Nairobi are charged at a flat rate ranging from Ksh2,560 and Ksh4,800 depending on the zine of the land.
On the other hand commercial, residential and agricultural land is charged at 0.115 per cent of the land value.
Penalties for late payments are charged at 3 per cent per month until the rate is charged in full.
