The Kenya Meteorological Department has announced the weakening of Cyclone Ialy which hit the Indian Ocean.
In an update issued on Wednesday, May 22, it was noted that the cyclone would still result in rains and storms in the coastal cities despite weakening.
Therefore, the Department advised Lamu, Kilifi, Mombasa and Kwale residents to prepare for the weather conditions which are likely to be experienced later in the day.
"Ialy has weakened to a moderate tropical storm but remains significant due to its intensity near the equator. The centre of Ialy is expected to stay over 150km from the East African coasts.
"Moderate rain, stormy conditions, and strong winds are anticipated along the western periphery of the system, impacting the coastal areas of Kenya, and neighbouring countries," read the advisory in part.
On the other hand, Kenya Met also maintained its advisory against the use of small boats in the ocean owing to the expected wind and waves.
The waves expected in the ocean are projected to be higher than three meters.
Nonetheless, Kenya Met indicated that it would continue to monitor the cyclone even as Kenyans will be informed of further developments in time.
"Ialy is experiencing rapid weakening and is expected to dissipate completely by Wednesday morning while remaining offshore.
"The residual vortex is unlikely to persist long enough to cross the equator," read the statement in part.
The impact of the cyclones was felt in parts of the coastal towns on Tuesday afternoon after roofs were blown off and some buildings destroyed. This was occasioned by the strong winds registered in the coastal counties.
Some areas also experienced blackouts owing to the disruption of power supply.
