Nairobi has been ranked top in the list of cities in Africa with the most expensive international schools.
A report published by the International Schools Database and released on Wednesday revealed that the annual school fees at international schools located in Kenya run up to Ksh4.71 million per year.
Per the report, the median price in terms of school fees in Nairobi is Ksh688,000 or USD 5,335 annually. On the global front, Nairobi was ranked position 67 while New York featured in first position.
"The top 3 most expensive cities are all very close together in terms of median prices for international schools. Nairobi, Johannesburg and Casablanca all have median prices of around Ksh681,000 (USD5,300) per year."
The publisher calculates the fees using quotes provided for one student for one full term which excludes one-off costs such as enrollment and application fees.
Globally, USA and China were listed as the most expensive countries for international education.
In Europe, countries such as Spain, Portugal, Denmark and Bulgaria were ranked as having international schools providing affordable education.
"While New York City is once again the most expensive destination in the world for international schools, it is cities across China that really dominate the top end of the pricing scale. Beijing, Shanghai, Shenzhen, and Guangzhou all feature in the top 10 highest prices," read part of the report.
Fees in the two countries, the USA and China, ranged between Ksh618,300 (USD 4,812) and Ksh8.4 million (USD 65,850).
Meanwhile, in Africa, Johannesburg South Africa featured in second position, offering a mixed bag of annual school fees at some international schools.
In some, fees go as high as Ksh3.3 million (USD25,862) while in others, fees go as low as Ksh131,700 (USD1,025).
The median annual school fee for an international school in Johannesburg was pegged at Ksh681,100 (USD 5,301).
Casablanca in Morocco featured in third position with the median school fees being capped at Ksh674,700 (USD5,251). The minimum price is Ksh466,500 (USD3,631) while the maximum is Ksh1.7 million (USD13,279).
Kampala, Uganda's capital was ranked in fourth place with school fees for prestigious institutions in the city ranging between Ksh83,500 (USD650) and Ksh2.9 million (USD22,800).
In the fifth position was another city from South Africa, Cape Town. Parents taking their children to international schools part with as low as Ksh252,700 (USD1,967) and as high as Ksh694,000 (USD5,401).
Cape Town was listed as the most consistent city in the continent regarding the minimum and maximum range of prices.
"Only those cities with 7 or more international schools, and with prices publicly available representing at least 25 per cent of the schools in the city," read part of the report.
