Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Mithika Linturi on Wednesday intervened as debate intensified over the ban of Muguka by coastal counties.
Linturi while addressing the press, announced the government's intention to implement the Crops Regulations Act of 2023 to help curb the Muguka menace.
According to the CS, once implemented, the regulations will provide for what area to sell the crop and at what time.
The CS also noted that a pricing committee had already been formed to address the prominent issues raised by the dissenting parties.
Linturi stated that the Ministry of Agriculture would by the close of this week gazette the Muguka & Miraa Pricing Committee that would give guidelines on the prices of the two products.
The CS further noted that the government had already kicked off a sensitization campaign ahead of the implementation of the new regulations.
"I want now to have a committee as mandated in the regulations for them to sit and be able to give guidelines on how Muguka will be sold," the CS noted.
Linturi also announced that the government was in the process of mobilizing the leaders to have a meeting and address the concerns raised.
CS Mithika Linturi's sentiments come a day after counties in the coast region launched an anti-Muguka campaign as they expressed their displeasure by what they perceive to be President William Ruto's lack of action.
The campaign, dubbed ‘Say No to Muguka’, kicked off on June 12, to compel the government to address the concerns of residents in the coastal region.
The campaign is set to cut across the counties of Mombasa, Kilifi, Kwale, Taita Taveta, Tana River and Lamu.
While heading the campaign, Mombasa County Deputy Governor Francis Thoya accused the government for disregarding the adverse effects of Muguka.
