Increased Court Security, Staff Support & Date of Mourning Ordered After Magistrate Monica Kivuti's Death

Chief Justice Martha Koome on Saturday mourned Makadara Chief Magistrate Monica Kivuti following the latter's tragic death at the Nairobi hospital.

In a statement, CJ Koome revealed that Kivuti succumbed to gunshot wounds sustained on June 13 while holding an active court session at the law courts.

While commenting after visiting Kivuti's family on Friday noon, Koome ordered all Judiciary flags to be flown at half-mast across all court stations until the deceased is laid to rest.

CJ Koome also declared Tuesday, June 18, as a day of mourning for the entire Judiciary in solidarity with Kivuti's family, friends, and colleagues as well as all Judges.

"No Court will sit on this day. Matters that had been listed on Tuesday across all Courts and Tribunals will be accommodated in the Court dairies on a priority basis," the Chief Justice stated.

Presiding Judges and Heads of Stations were also directed to lead the remembrance meetings in common rooms in all court stations across the
country on June 18 at 10 am.

"This is to allow Judges, Judicial Officers and Staff to commemorate the life of Kivuti and to commiserate with the family and one another," Koome stated.

The Ministry of Interior and the Office of Inspector General of Police were urged to deploy additional officers to reinforce the complement of Officers in the Judiciary Police Unit.

According to Koome, the Judiciary administrative units will work on boosting security across all court stations using available resources.

Additionally, Martha Koome stated that Judicial officers and staff at the Makadara Law Courts would continue receiving psycho-social support to cope with the incident.

"We call upon professional medical and psychological counselling entities to provide complimentary psycho-social support to Judiciary members and affected court users across the country," the Chief Justice urged.

The Chief Justice also formulated a committee comprising of judicial officers that will guide the funeral preparation. the committee was directed to work handily with Kivuti's family to ensure proper send-off.
