Travel time between Nairobi and Mombasa is expected to reduce significantly upon the completion of the Ksh470 billion Usahihi Expressway.

According to Everstrong Capital, which is undertaking the 400-kilometre road, motorists will spend four hours less on the road.

The contractor also noted that motorists will also witness a significant reduction in fuel expenditures.

"Currently, this road is two lanes, winding and very dangerous. With the creation of the new modern dual carriage expressway, the current 10-hour journey between Nairobi and Mombasa will be shortened to approximately four hours and 30 minutes," the contractor stated.

As detailed, the project will feature additional lanes for the dual carriage. There will also be special overtaking lanes to help in the fast traffic flow.

On the other hand, it was detailed that the road will be tolled with the toll stations set to be powered by solar panels.

Equally, to encourage the uptake of electric vehicles, the contractor revealed that electric charges will be installed along the road.

"The installation of electric vehicle charging stations will encourage the use of electric buses and other eco-friendly vehicles on the toll road, contributing to a greener transport system.

"Specially designed animal crossings, developed in consultation with wildlife agencies, will safeguard local fauna and preserve the natural environment," the US company stated.

Further, it was noted that a tree line would be set up along the road to reduce noise pollution for residents living near the road.

"Everstrong Capital distinguishes itself by offering to construct, finance, and operate the Usahihi Expressway, a state-of-the-art dual carriage four-six lane expressway, without imposing risks on the Kenyan government. This project is removed from Kenya’s balance sheet and is designed to pay for itself, representing a wealth corridor opportunity," the company added.

The Usahihi Expressway is one of the projects that was agreed on during President William Ruto's visit to the United States of America. The project is estimated to cost Ksh470 billion.

In readiness for the project, the American company signed a deal with the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) signed a project development agreement.
