Travellers were on Thursday, June 20, forced to spend a better part of the day stuck along the Thika Highway after protesters barricaded the road.

The traffic snarl-up was caused by Anti-Finance Bill protesters who resorted to staging their demonstrations along the ever-busy highway.

Videos obtained by Kenyans.co.ke depicted the protesters holding huge placards and standing along Thika road, disrupting traffic flow.

While expressing their grievances, demonstrators blocked one of the lanes which leads to Nairobi City leaving the opposite lane for use by motorists travelling out of the city.

The persistent demonstrators compelled drivers to seek alternative routes as they intensified their protests.

Numerous vehicles, including heavy commercial trucks, public service vehicles, and private cars, became gridlocked along the highway despite attempts to navigate through the traffic.

The protesters, vocal about their grievances, urged lawmakers to withdraw the contentious Finance Bill, arguing that the proposed tax measures would have adverse effects on them.

During the demonstrations, the protesters were observed marching slowly towards Nairobi City to join others protesting in the Central Business District.

This recent incident occurred just a month after residents of Githurai 45 staged protests along the same highway, blocking it with rocks.

The Githurai residents protested against the government's perceived inaction in addressing the recurring flood crisis that had left many homes submerged.

They accused the authorities of failing to provide effective solutions while their homes remained flooded.

In widely circulated images, protesters could be seen engaging with police officers who had been dispatched to contain the situation.

Amid escalating protests, some motorists exited their vehicles, helplessly observing the unfolding events from a distance.
