Embakasi Central Member of Parliament, Mejjadonk Benjamin, has pledged to staunchly defend Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua against any potential impeachment efforts.
Addressing a gathering on Saturday in Murang'a County, attended by Deputy President Gachagua himself, MP Benjamin criticized a group of MPs and leaders from Northern Kenya who have threatened to pursue Gachagua's impeachment.
He alleged that legislators from North Eastern Kenya had issued a stern warning regarding the Deputy President's impeachment during a press conference intended to support National Intelligence Service Director Noordin Haji.
"The other day I saw North Eastern MPs having a press conference to defend one of their own, they vowed to impeach the Deputy President. I am telling them to bring it on, we will deal with it," he said.
The MP strongly criticised those who oppose Deputy President Gachagua's efforts to unite the people of Mount Kenya. He pledged to mobilise UDA legislators to vehemently oppose any attempts to impeach the Deputy President.
Deputy President Gachagua faced backlash after calling for the resignation of NIS Director Noordin Haji due to intelligence failures during the Finance Bill protests.
During a fundraising event in Murang'a on Saturday, Gachagua dismissed his critics, asserting that he had no intention of resigning. He reaffirmed his commitment to serving as Deputy President of Kenya, emphasizing that he was elected by the people and dedicated to fulfilling his duties.
Gachagua clarified that he remains an integral part of the current government and would not yield to impeachment threats.
His statements were in response to calls from North Eastern MPs demanding his resignation over remarks made regarding Haji.
Leaders from Northern Kenya expressed their disappointment with Gachagua's accusations during a press conference, describing them as regrettable.
Earlier in the week, the Deputy President accused the NIS director of linking him and former President Uhuru Kenyatta to the Anti-Finance Bill protests.
