The Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS) on Saturday announced a significant drop in prices of thirteen essential commodities.
In its latest survey, KNBS disclosed prices of commodities such as petrol, cooking gas and most food items had dropped in June compared to May.
Other commodities whose prices also dropped in price include wheat flour, onions, sugar, maize flour, oranges, kerosene and diesel.
According to KNBS, the reduction in the above commodities contributed to the drop in the country’s inflation levels from 5.0 per cent to 4.6 per cent.
The survey revealed that for the past 12 months, the inflation rate dropped from 7.9 per cent to 5.0 last month before declining further to the current level of 4.6 per cent.
"The overall year-on-year (annual) inflation rate as measured by the Consumer Price Index (CPI) was 4.6 per cent, in June 2024, with a monthly inflation rate of 0.4 per cent," read part KNBS report.
However, KNBS in its report, similarly announced a hike in price for some seven critical commodities including electricity and vegetables such as kale, spinach and cabbages.
The prices of most commodities had been projected to rise following the recent anti-government protests that brought businesses across the country to a halt.
The violent protests also led to loss of lives, injuries and even damage to property amounting to millions of shillings.
Meanwhile, In its May 2024 survey, KNBS announced a price increase for several commodities such as electricity, cereals and vegetables.
Other commodities whose prices also rose in the previous month include beef, white rice and expenses on monthly house rent.
KNBS attributed the rise in the prices of the above commodities to a slight increase in the rate of inflation between April and May from 5.0 per cent to 5.1 per cent.
