Individuals who sustained injuries during the ongoing anti-Finance Bill protests were treated for free at the Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) and discharged for free.

A source who spoke to Kenyans.co.ke on condition of anonymity indicated that all the victims were covered by an emergency fund operational at the national hospital.

He explained that the fund, which takes care of disaster victims, settles all the bills incurred by victims admitted from disasters.

"There is an emergency disaster fund that handles all these things. None of the victims will pay the fees. They have all been treated and gone home," our source explained.

On Wednesday last week, officials at the hospital confirmed to the press that KNH received an influx of 165 patients with injuries, 55 of which required surgery.

The hospital began receiving casualties from 11:00 am on Tuesday, which marked the most intense day of the protests.

Most of the injuries were classified as soft tissue injuries, while several victims suffered blunt force trauma.

Twenty individuals were shot with rubber bullets and six sustained injuries from live ammunition at that time.

Our source, however, could not confirm the total number of victims the hospitals have received since the protests began on June 18.

Discussions about establishing the Fund were initially proposed in 2015 by the then Health Cabinet Secretary James Macharia.

At the time, Macharia explained that the fund would be necessary to support health institutions strained by handling disasters arising from security issues.

"We agreed that KNH needs to be given a special fund to cater for disasters," Macharia noted at the time.
