President William Ruto has named a 20 member task force to address human resources for health in the country.

Ruto, through a gazette notice dated 5th July, said that the establishment of the task force on human resources for health was deemed necessary to formulate comprehensive strategies and policies to enhance the health care services in the country.

The Head of State further noted a need to assess and address current challenges and gaps in the recruitment, replacement, training and retention of healthcare professionals.

He appointed Khama Rogo as the Chairperson and Judith Guserwa the Vice Chairperson of the task force.

Other task force members include  Patrick Amoth, John Masasabi, Toseef Din, Wilson Aruasa, Doreen Rhoda Kanyua, Dennis Miskellah, and Francis Wafula, Habiba Mohammed, Lucy Mburu, Collins Kiprono, Victor Miseda, Christine Okoth and six others.

In a move to revamp the healthcare sector, the Commander-in-Chief noted that equitable and affordable healthcare devoid of any incidences of corruption is a critical contributing factor in the realization of the nation's social, and economic aspirations.

The government pointed to the disconnect that has been experienced in the past years on the management of health care services and personnel.

"The management of human resources for health is a shared function between the two levels of government. The key challenges are however fragmentation and a disconnect in the management of health services and personnel, and reduction in the complexity of care provided at the local level."

The task force will report to the President and the Ministry of Health, recommend and identify the legal, policy, administrative, and operational constraints impeding the performance of the healthcare sector in Kenya regarding human resources for health.

The team will also identify and recommend legal, policy, administrative, institutional, and operational human resources for health reforms in Kenya.

It is also mandated to advise and recommend the framework for the employment of 20,000 healthcare workers: doctors, nurses, and clinical officers to bridge the doctor-patient gap.

The task force will then later review the performance of human resources for health in Kenya and recommend improvement.
