Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga on Wednesday, July 10 broke silence after he was criticised for backing the dialogue initiated by President William Ruto.

In a statement, Odinga noted that many Kenyans did not support a handshake or a unity government between the duo.

The Azimio leader stated that he had received the message adding that he would heed the calls by Kenyans.

Raila made the remarks after meeting with Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna and his collegues Eddy Oketch and Crystal Asige.

"Nimeambiwa na hawa viongozi kwamba mumesema hamtaki handshake. Ujumbe umefika," he stated.

Loosely translated to "I have been told by these leaders that you do not want a handshake. I have received your message."

The ODM boss was among the leaders who were criticised after supporting the national dialogue that was initiated by Ruto after the anti-Finance Bill protests.

Following the backing, reports emerged indicating that a unity government was in the offing.

Additionally, ODM issued a statement directing its members against participating in the protests.

The party noted that it would give dialogue a chance as embraced by Ruto and Raila.

"In making the call, the party leader did what he always does. Raila Odinga always helps the country pull back from the precipice whenever we find ourselves there.

"There can be no doubt that as a country, we are at a crossroads and approaching a precipice. One of us has to be magnanimous and patriotic enough to help call the country to order. Once again, Raila is being called names," read the statement by ODM chairperson John Mbadi.

As detailed by the President and the former premier, the dialogue is scheduled to begin on Monday, July 15.
