A sombre mood engulfed residents of Ndiya in Kirinyaga County after a woman allegedly drowned two of her children aged 3 and 4 inside a swamp.
A resident who had gone fishing noticed the 20-year-old woman throwing the two children inside the swamp and quickly informed other villagers.
According to one of the locals, efforts to rescue the children proved futile after discovering that the children had already succumbed.
"I could not act immediately as I was fishing several meters away from where she was, it took me over five minutes to reach where she was," revealed the witness.
While narrating the occurrence, one resident disclosed the suspect reportedly sought permission to access her children from the school, claiming she wanted them to accompany her to a burial.
Upon obtaining permission for her children, the woman proceeded to a nearby quarry-turned swamp where she threw the duo.
“The mother took the two children and threw them inside these waters, when a rescue team arrived, the children were found dead. So we came to confirm and we found that they were dead,” narrated another local.
Following the incident, the angry residents beat up the woman who was rescued on the verge of death by police officers who later rushed her to the hospital.
According to another resident, the woman resorted to throwing her two children into the swamp on allegations that her husband kicked her out of their home.
Kirinyaga West Sub-County Police Commander Moses Koskei while confirming the tragedy, disclosed they have commenced investigations into the matter.
Meanwhile, the bodies of the deceased were taken to Kerugoya Hospital mortuary, awaiting postmortem.
