Clinical officers (COs) signed a return-to-work formula with the national government on Monday officially ending their strike.

“Today, the Ministry of Health has successfully negotiated and signed a return-to-work agreement with the Kenya Union of Clinical Officers (KUCO), effectively ending the ongoing strike," read the Ministry of Health’s statement.

The Ministry of Health revealed that one of the terms of the return to work formula was enhanced salaries for the clinical officers, which was also one of the demands by the COs.

Further, the COS will be entitled to better employment terms, which the ministry did not disclose.

Another of the terms that will be met by the government is the issuance of a comprehensive medical cover as had been demanded by the COs.

Clinical officers will also be entitled to reinforced health and safety measures from the government while carrying out their duties.

Additionally, the government will be required to expand its portfolio of training opportunities offered to the Clinical Officers.

“This pivotal agreement encompasses enhanced salaries, improved employment terms, comprehensive medical cover, expanded training opportunities, and reinforced health and safety measures,” stated MOH.

During the signing the MOH, reiterated that they believed the resolution would address critical concerns and ensure stability within the healthcare sector.

This follows the signing of a Return to Work Formula agreement between the workers’ union and the Council of Governors (CoG) on July 8.

The agreement signed between the medics and the governors saw the clinical officers returning to work on July 9.

“We have been on strike until today. By virtue of signing this agreement, we are officially declaring that our strike has come to an end,” said KUCO Secretary General George Gibore.

“Our members shall resume duty in their respective places of work starting today,” he added during the signing  with the governors.
