The Franciscan Sisters of St. Joseph have addressed a widely circulated video showing a regrettable incident in which a nun assaulted another nun at their convent in Asumbi, Homa Bay County.
In a statement, Sister Mary Goretty Ochieng, FSJ, the Superior General of St. Teresa’s Covenant, Asumbi, said the congregation strongly condemned the incident.
“The Franciscan Sisters of St. Joseph have become aware of a deeply regrettable incident involving one of our members physically assaulting a younger Sister, a clip of which has circulated widely on social media,” the statement read in part.
The video, which sparked outrage online, showed a nun angrily confronting another sister.
The unidentified nun was heard issuing commands before striking her colleague twice.
“You see, you haven’t done anything? You are a small person, but the things you are doing to me here, who do you think you are?” the nun demanded.
In response, the younger sister pleaded in a frail voice: “Why are you beating me? Why are you beating me in front of workers?”
The exact cause of the altercation remains unclear, but both women are confirmed to be members of the Franciscan Sisters of St. Joseph Community.
Sister Goretty emphasized that the act was a personal failing and does not reflect the values of the congregation.
She added that the sisters deeply regret the harm caused to the victim, as well as the scandal and pain the incident has brought to the congregation, the Church, and the wider public.
“Our charism is joyful love, and compassion. Violence in any form is contrary to our way of life. We are addressing this matter according to Church and Congregational procedures, with the aim to ensure the dignity and well-being of all our members,” the statement continued.
The congregation further appealed for prayers as they work toward healing and reconciliation.
“We ask for prayers for those directly affected and for our Congregation as a whole as we seek healing and reconciliation,” Sister Goretty added.
