Vernacular radio presenter Mercy Mawia passed away on Tuesday, July 23 while undergoing treatment at a hospital in Nairobi.
Mawia who worked at Mbaitu FM has been mourned as a distinguished journalist who made an impact in the media industry.
The radio station confirmed the presenter's death adding that she passed away on Tuesday morning while undergoing a surgical procedure. Her husband was at her side when she unfortunately passed away.
"It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of our Drive Show presenter Mercy Mawai. Mercy aka Kamuwetangi, passed on this morning while undergoing treatment," the station announced.
Mawia has been mourned by fellow journalists and Machakos Governor Wavinya Ndeti who sent condolence messages to family and friends.
The governor described the deceased as a professional who was exceptional in her career who effortlessly engaged and interacted with her audience.
"She was an iconic role model to young girls aspiring to pursue a career in the media. I pray that the almighty God grants her family strength to bear with the tragic loss and assure them of my support in the arrangements to accord her deserving send-off," she added.
On the other hand, another veteran journalist Bonnie Musambi also sent his condolences to Mawia's family. He described her as one of the best Kamba presenters to ever grace the microphone.
Musambi who works as the Director of Coordination in the Office of the State House Spokesperson emphasised that the media fraternity had lost a great talent.
The journalist was mourned by her fans and other individuals in the entertainment industry who wished her family strength.
Her fans noted that she was lively and had a 'bubbly' personality while on air. Most expressed their belief that the radio station had lost a valuable member.
"Mercy Mawia, till we meet again. May your soul rest in eternal peace," one of her fans wrote.
