Laikipia East Member of Parliament Mwangi Kiunjuri has revealed a high-level meeting between opposition leader Raila Odinga and prominent Mount Kenya leaders.
Kiunjuri clarified the context of the meeting, emphasizing that it was not initiated by President William Ruto.
"It is not Ruto who has looked for Raila. It is us, as Mt Kenya people, who have looked for Raila," he stated.
His comment underscores a collective decision by the Mount Kenya leadership to engage with Odinga, potentially indicating strategic political manoeuvring ahead of the next election cycle.
The disclosure comes at a time of heightened political activity and realignment in Kenya, with leaders across the spectrum seeking to consolidate their bases and forge new alliances.
Raila, a veteran politician and leader of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), has been a significant player in Kenyan politics for decades, known for his robust support base and influence.
The revelation by the Laikipia East MP came barely a day after President Ruto nominated ODM big boys to his Cabinet, a move some leaders in the opposition termed as a surprise.
Delivering the list, Ruto said the nomination was part of a move by his government to create a broad-based Cabinet to deliver his promise to Kenyans.
In the second batch of Cabinet nominees, the head of state nominated John Mbadi in the Treasury ministry, Ugunja MP James Opiyo Wandayi will assume the Energy docket, former Mombasa Governor Ali Hassan Joho will head the Mining and Blue Economy ministry, while former Kakamega Governor Wycliffe Oparanya will take charge of the Ministry of Cooperatives and MSMEs Development.
A section of ODM leaders have disputed the nominations, saying at it was not the position of the party to sponsor senior members to government.
Speaking at Inooro TV, the Mount Kenya leader claimed that there was glaring disunity in the ruling alliance which has enabled the opposition chief to make inroads.
