The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) has announced progress in its investigation into the shooting of Mediamax journalist Catherine Wanjeri.
According to IPOA Assistant Director Josphat Kaimenyi, the investigation is 80% complete, with efforts being made to finalize the remaining aspects swiftly.
"I want to assure Kenyans and members of the press that we are on top of issues on the investigations of the harm that Wanjeri underwent," Kaimenyi stated.
"As IPOA, we send our pole to her and we wish her a quick recovery."
Speaking outside IPOA offices in Nakuru, Kaimenyi highlighted that the investigation has reached its final stages and what was remaining was just documents from the police.
"We are finalizing on investigations of the fellow, that is the tail end of the investigations. We have received the P3 form, we are also following up with other institutions of government like the police so that they can also fast-track to give us some documents that we require to finalize our investigations," he explained.
Catherine Wanjeri, the victim of the police shooting, expressed her hope and trust in IPOA's efforts.
"I am hopeful that with the speed that they have gotten the information, I believe that they are going to give us the justice that we require for me and other journalists," she said.
The shooting incident, which occurred during a public demonstration in Nakuru, sparked widespread condemnation and calls for accountability from various media houses and human rights organizations.
Wanjeri was covering the protest on July 16, when she was shot, leading to her hospitalization and subsequent calls for justice.
The incident has been condemned by the Kenya Union of Journalists, which is demanding accountability.
Dozens of journalists marched through Nakuru’s streets to the Central Police Station to protest the shooting. They carried banners and posters with photos of the injured Wanjeri and chanted slogans.
Dozens of protesters have clashed with police resulting in the deaths and injuries of innocent Kenyans who took to the streets to protest against the government.
