Survivors of the road accident that killed two people and left scores injured in the wee hours of Saturday morning along the Nakuru-Eldoret highway have recounted the last moments before the bus crash.
The first survivor who spoke to the press on Saturday afternoon revealed the bus was travelling at normal speed when it suddenly began moving at an extremely slower pace.
According to the survivor, the change in speed triggered concerns from the passengers who began hounding the driver and pressuring him.
He narrated that as they approached the section of the road at the Twin Bridge area, the bus suddenly hit an oncoming lorry which went ahead to hit a salon car.
The bus then rolled down the valley next to the road before landing on a water stream.
“There were two conductors and a co-driver, we travelled for a long distance before the bus suddenly changed its speed, we were not sure whether the driver was asleep or not,” narrated one of the survivors.
“When we arrived at this section of the road, the bus suddenly hit a lorry which went ahead to hit a car. The bus then rolled.”
According to another survivor, travellers in the Public Service Vehicle (PSV) began complaining about slow pace as the bus approached the Twin Bridge. Before reaching this section, the bus was cruising at a high speed.
However, the driver did not heed their call and continued with the journey only for the bus to ram into an oncoming lorry.
The accident which occurred at around 4 am caused a huge traffic along the major highway even as rescue teams from the Kenya Red Cross intensified their efforts to rescue those trapped inside the wreckage.
The latest reports suggest that so far 2 people have been confirmed dead with more than 44 people rushed to hospital after sustaining critical injuries.
"47 casualties were reported, 17 were evacuated to Molo Sub-County Hospital, and 30 were stabilized at the scene. A multi-agency response team from the Kenya Red Cross from Molo responded," read part of the statement by the Kenya Red Cross.
