A family in Ebuluchia Village, Kakamega County is mourning the death of their daughter, Brenda Masakhwe days after successful dowry negotiations.
The bride was one of the 5 people who died on the spot on Saturday following a road accident that involved a trailer that rammed into the vehicle the bridal entourage was cruising in.
The bride had taken her husband-to-be for dowry negotiations in a joyous celebration that got the two families eating, dancing and enjoying together.
"We had a very joyous celebration on Saturday, my daughter was thrilled, I didn't know she was going to perish in an accident and I wouldn't see her again" a heartbroken Mary Masokhwe mother to Brenda Masakhwe narrated.
Before the unfortunate ordeal, Brenda was so cheerful and happy to present her husband's family to her parents. They even packed a lot of goodies to take back home.
"They had come to ask for my daughter's hand in marriage, to which I consented. They left at around 4 p.m. in the evening and that was the last time I saw my daughter," Javan Masakhwe, Brenda's father said.
Brenda and four others met their death after a trailer driver said to have been overspeeding from Eldoret hit a tractor’s rear before losing control and colliding with an oncoming Toyota Probox, which Brenda was travelling in. The accident occurred in the Murgus area along the Eldoret-Malaba highway, Kakamega County.
Two survivors who escaped with injuries are currently receiving treatment at the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital in Eldoret, while the bodies of the five were taken to Webuye Hospital Morgue.
Meanwhile, Brenda's family is heartbroken that the meeting that would have ended in joy with a wedding ceremony will be sadly ending in tears as they will be burying their loved one.
Lugari Sub-County Police Commander Julius Melly said that they are still investigating the tragedy. Cases of road accidents have been on the increase despite NTSA’s calls to road users to be more vigilant.
On Saturday, one other person lost their life after a multiple-vehicle crash in the Migaa area.
The accident involving a Simba bus and other vehicles occurred on Saturday dawn, August 24, at Molo's Twin Bridge along the Eldoret-Nakuru Highway.
The National Transport and Safety Authority has continued their calls for road safety, especially when schools are being opened for third term.
NTSA's road safety manager Samuel Musumba has urged school transport and public services operators to ensure their vehicles are in good condition before embarking on journeys
