Property of unknown value went up in smoke at Nandi Primary School in Kapsabet after a fire erupted and razed down a dormitory. The fire also destroyed six teachers' quarters.

It is believed that the fire was caused by an explosion of a gas cylinder in one of the rooms in the building. It is suspected the gas leak was caused by the student and the fire broke out in the evening of Wednesday at a small section before spreading to the rest of the building.

Residents tried to put out the fire but it, unfortunately, spread rapidly. As a result, they requested fire extinguishers from the nearby fire station.

Firefighters from Nandi County arrived at the scene and contained the blaze before it could spread to adjoining classrooms. Nothing was salvaged from the inferno.

“We arrived here and assessed the fire and found out that it was consuming a dormitory. We tried to contain the fire in about one hour,” the head of the fire department stated.

Fortunately, no casualties or injuries were recorded.

Parents, therefore, appealed to well-wishers to help them reconstruct the building and donate furniture since students already resumed school.

At the same time, area residents blamed their member of Parliament for neglecting the school in providing financial help.

“Our member of parliament has neglected us for long, we had requested him to build for us a class which he signed a check of two million which he later cancelled,” one of the residents lamented.

“We are requesting him to release emergency fund immediately to help construct this school.”

According to the residents Nandi Primary is among the most populated schools in Nandi County. As such they call for the government to intervene.

This incident comes barely a month after a fire razed down a dormitory at Igoji Primary School in Meru on August 12, 2024.
