Several pupils at a primary school in Meru collapsed on Friday after police officers stormed the learning institution during which they lobbed teargas canisters while attempting to disperse a group of protesters who had taken refuge at the building.
According to reports, the police lobbed the canisters while the pupils were in their classrooms going about their routine learning activities.
In the videos scrutinised by Kenyans.co.ke, the school teachers were depicted attempting to resuscitate some of the students who had collapsed after inhaling the fumes.
Other pupils were captured scampering to get to water points to reduce the irritation caused by the tear gas fumes.
"There were about four tear gas canisters, one for canisters was thrown inside the classroom but I think it was on accident," narrated one of the teachers.
"When the gear gas was thrown inside the school, some of the protesters jumped through the fence and entered the school compound."
A rescue team was immediately dispatched to the school during which first aid was administered to the affected pupils before they were ferried to the hospital.
Due to the large number of affected pupils, the medical experts were forced to seek for more ambulances to ensure timely assistance for all.
Meanwhile, the demonstrators were captured rushing out of the school after a brief confrontation with the officers inside the school.
While expressing their concerns, the demonstrators vowed to continue with their protests until Meru Governor Kawira Mwangaza stepped down from her position as Governor of Meru County.
"We will protest until the governor steps down, she must leave office, if she does not leave the office we will continue to demonstrate," stated one of the protesters.
"We have already given her two years to serve us but we have not seen any developments in the county, she has been impeached on two occasions but saved by the Senate, this time round she must step down."
