Witnesses in the Muhoroni accident that occurred along the Nakuru-Muhoroni Highway on Tuesday have recounted the last moments leading to the tragedy that left 13 people dead.
Speaking to the press, one of the witnesses claimed that the driver of the lorry was speeding when he veered off the road before ramming into an oncoming matatu en-route to Kisumu.
According to the witness, the lorry lost control after attempting to dodge several potholes along the highway only for the truck to get into a head-on collision with the matatu.
“The lorry was from Londiani while the matatu was heading to Kisumu. I saw the lorry speeding before ramming into the matatu,” narrated one of the witnesses.
“I then heard the driver of the matatu say, 'Why does the driver of the lorry want to kill us?' only for me to see the lorry leaning on the matatu. I also heard a woman groaning inside the vehicle questioning, 'Why is the driver of the lorry killing us yet we’re taking our children to school'”
However, according to another witness, the driver might have been under the control of a drug when the accident occurred.
“I was closely following the lorry and it was being driven at a high speed. The lorry was attempting to dodge the pothole but he had already lost control and it seemed he was on a drug,” claimed another witness.
While expressing the concerns, the area residents called on the government to construct a speed bump along the section of the road to avert such occurrences.
The locals threatened to stage demonstrations should the government fail to heed to the call. "We want to appeal to the government of Kenya today that henceforth, let the road be redone," one resident stated.
Meanwhile, the accident, which occurred on Tuesday afternoon, left 13 people dead with three left nursing critical injuries.
Following the tragedy, the bodies of the deceased were moved to St Vincent mortuary awaiting identification and a subsequent postmortem.
The police have since cleared the wreckage from the scene and towed both vehicles to Kapsitet police station even as probe commences for such of the lorry driver who is currently at large.
