Preliminary reports indicated that several casualties were trapped inside the matatu that overturned after the accident.

One family transporting a body of their loved one from Nairobi to Rongo was hit by a double tragedy as the van they were travelling in rolled down the escarpment following the accident.

It is alleged that the LPG gas driver tried to control the vehicle which lost its brakes before the accident occured.

Eyewitnesses explained that the matatu, operating as a long distance shuttle, rolled down a cliff landing upside down with another van.

A tour van was also hit, with the back of the window completely shattered. The police are yet to issue an official statement concerning the crash.

The accident comes less than a month after another accident along the Meru to Nairobi Highway at Nithi Bridge claimed lives of 12 people.

The National Traffic Safety Authority (NTSA) estimates that 3,000 people die in road accidents every year, with many of the accidents occurring on weekends, during festivities and public holidays.
