At least six students were on Friday morning killed in a road accident at the Witoo Shopping Centre along the Kitui-Kibwezi road in Kitui County.

While confirming the incident, the police revealed that those killed included three primary school pupils and three others from a nearby secondary school.

The police further disclosed that the students were knocked down by a Probox as they attempted to cross a road.

After noticing what he had done, the driver fled the scene before later surrendering to the police station.

The driver was arrested and taken to a police station for further interrogation and his vehicle impounded.

Meanwhile, the officers noted that a probe had been launched to unravel factors that led to the cause of the accident.

In an analogous situation earlier this year, four students were reportedly knocked by a speeding car along the busy Stendikisa-Kilingili Road in Vihiga County.

The Igunga Girls High School students were knocked after they attempted to cross the ever-busy highway. During the incident, one student succumbed to the injuries.

Confirming the accident, Sabatia Sub-County Police Commander Patrick Gogo revealed that the four students were crossing the road to go to class for their morning lessons when the vehicle knocked them down.

"We are investigating the incident to see if both parties were negligent and we shall be taking the relevant action," said Gogo.

According to a police report, the deceased student was in form one and was barely a month old at the institution.

Meanwhile, the other three students were rushed to the Vihiga County Referral Hospital (VCRH) in Mbale for treatment.
