The County Government of Nairobi has accounted for all the people who were feared to be trapped in the building that collapsed in Kahawa West on Sunday, October 20.
A lady and a child who had been trapped in the building were safely evacuated and taken to safety. Earlier, 100 occupants of the mixed development building were evacuated on time as the condemned building collapsed in Kahawa West.
Nairobi County Deputy Governor Njoroge Muchiri visited the scene of the collapsed eight-story building in Kahawa West to assess the situation.
“All the workers who were working on the ground floor of the 8-storey collapsed building have all been accounted for,” the County added.
The city-county also confirmed that occupants of the adjacent buildings with visible cracks and signs of structural weaknesses were asked to leave.
“The nearby buildings have exhibited signs of structural failures, and tenants have since been evacuated,” County Government of Nairobi confirmed.
Two casualties were reported during the incident. The first one was a middle-aged lady, who was outside the building and got injured by the falling rubble during the collapse.
The second casualty was a middle-aged gentleman who was rescued with a broken leg. Both were rescued and rushed to the hospital for specialized treatment.
Earlier, all Nairobi County teams were fully engaged in disaster recovery and evacuation of occupants from adjacent buildings. The County's Multi-sectoral team had also set up a command center to coordinate operations.
County Officials further emphasized the owner of the building would be arrested and arraigned in court. “We will scale up building audits on all illegal developments in the Kahawa West area,” stated County Executive Committee Member (CECM) of Built Environment and Urban Planning, Partick Mbogo.
Nairobi City County pledged to continue with recovery efforts as they dig through the rubble to see if they find any other person trapped.
“Operations are still ongoing. Further progress is to be provided as the recovery efforts progress,” the county official added.
