Moi University has cleared the air on a notice going around alleging that it has transferred some of its students from the main campus to other campuses due to the financial constraints it is facing.
According to the notice dated Thursday 31, allegedly signed by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor Prof Kimengi, the students were purportedly directed to transfer to other campuses due to the inability of the University to house them.
"After a series of intensive discussions with the government, university staff, and workers, we were unable to reach viable and the university is now actively engaging with the Kenya University and Placement to facilitate the transfer of all affected students currently to other institutions. The move is essential," read part of the fake notice.
While clarifying the notice, the University flagged the notice as fake, clearing the air on whether the students were supposed to move or not.
These allegations come at a time when the University is facing a major boost after the National Assembly's Education Committee's Chairperson Julius Melly revealed that the National Treasury had released Ksh 609 million for the University in October 2024.
The University is also set to yet receive an additional Ksh 500 Million in November 2024.
"The National Treasury will avail an additional Ksh 500 million to Moi University by November 15th 2024", MP Julius Melly the National Assembly's Education Committee's Chairperson said.
To ensure that the University uses the money responsibly and doesn't fall into another cash crunch, Julius Melly revealed that a committee would be constituted to ensure that the institution uses the money responsibly.
"A caretaker committee will be constituted to strengthen the management of Moi University during the recovery period," he communicated.
Earlier, the University was forced to close down for over two weeks after its workers and lecturers went on strike due to delayed payments.
The University is expected to reopen on November 4 following the Committee's directive, that it reopen quickly to caution the students from losing more academic time.
"The committee has recommended that Moi University should reopen on November 4, 2024."
Before reopening the, University staff will be required to sign a return to work formula, "To facilitate the reopening, it is to be noted that staff unions will need to sign a return to work formula to promote consensus and set the stage for reopening and inter-ministerial committee comprising the Ministry of Education, National Treasury and Ministry of Labour", Melly clarified.
