Proceedings at the Elgeyo Mararkwet County Assembly were momentarily halted on Tuesday after Members of the County Assembly (MCAs) engaged in a physical altercation inside the chamber.

The wrangles ensued following a disagreement among members after a proposal was tabled recommending membership changes within the Isiolo County Public Service Board.

At the centre of the disagreement was the nomination of Sally Kimosop for the position of chairperson of the board, with some members citing concerns over her qualifications and suitability for the role.

During the afternoon session, a section of MCAs began protesting inside the chamber demanding the withdrawal of the notice that suggested the replacement of several members within the board.

It was during the objection to the notice that the altercation began, prompting the speaker of the county assembly to halt the proceedings as the rival politicians engaged in wrangles.

While expressing their dissatisfaction with the decision, a section of the members of the county assembly faulted their colleagues, accusing them of failing to engage them in the process of making the changes.

In the videos obtained by Kenyans.co.ke, two MCAs were captured engaging in fistfights as other assembly members attempted to separate them. During the incident, some MCAs were seen rushing out of the chamber.

In a separate incident on the same day, tensions ensued outside the Isiolo County Assembly after armed police officers engaged in a heated scrimmage with Burat MCA Nicolas Lorot’s bodyguards.

The fight broke out after the officers who had been deployed to man the assembly’s premises attempted to block Lorot from gaining access to the chambers where other MCAs had gathered to discuss county affairs.

Addressing the press after the incident, Lorot accused Isiolo County Governor Abdi Gouyo of orchestrating the incident. Lorot attributed the move to his recent sentiments targeting the governor over corruption within the county.

Lorot faulted the Isiolo County Assembly speaker Mohamed Roba for failing to formally notify him about the reasons for his suspension from the proceedings of the county assembly.

"When I came I found the sergeant-at-arms standing at the gate alongside a group of police officers, they were checking all the vehicles that were accessing the county assembly premises but when they saw my car they informed me that they had been told to stop me from entering the assembly chamber," Lorot explained.

"I tried to enquire the reason for my suspension but they did not give me any reason, I believe this is political, I told them to give me a notice showing the reason for my suspension but they told me to go to the police," he added.
