The Kenya Urban Roads Authority (KURA) has announced the planned temporary closure of 25 essential roads in Nairobi on December 1, 2024.

In a notice dated November 27, the authority stated that the closure was necessitated by the World AIDS Day half marathon that will take place between 6 AM and 10 AM.

The race is expected to commence at the Nyayo National Stadium and proceed to Museum Hill via Uhuru Highway and Kenyatta Avenue, among several other roads that will experience a four-hour traffic disruption.

"This is to notify motorists and the general public that sections of Nairobi Roads will be closed on Sunday 1st December 2024
from 6.00 am to 10.00 am for the 2024 World AIDS Day Half Marathon," part of the notice read.

The half marathon is intended to promote the health and well-being of men and boys, a demographic that has reported an alarmingly high rate of AIDS infection in 2024.

In addition to the two mentioned above, Koinange Street, Muindi Mbingu Street, Wabera Street, Taifa Road, Harambee Avenue, Parliament Road, and Haile Selassie Avenue will also be affected.

Lower and Upper Hill Roads will also experience this disruption, as will Marathon Road, Ragati Road, Hospital Road, and Elgon Road.

Completing the list are Matumbato Road, Masaba Road, Wakihuri Road, Bunyala Road, Commercial Street, Enterprise Road, Dar es Salaam Road, Dunga Road, Lusaka Road, and Aerodrome Road.

KURA's Director General, Silas Kinoti, in the notice, also apologised for any inconvenience caused and asked Kenyans to prepare accordingly and use alternative routes.

"The public is requested to utilise alternative routes as guided by traffic and marshals and to plan for this disruption. We regret the inconvenience this event will cause to your normal routine," he stated.

In addition to the half marathon, several other races will be conducted at Nyayo Stadium, including a 10km wheelchair and road race, a 5km family fun and corporate challenge, a 2km CEOs’ race for leaders, as well as a race for children and a disability-inclusive walk.

The theme for the 2024 World AIDS Day is 'Take the rights path: My health, my right'.
