Three people are feared dead and a further 44 are injured after a tragic road accident happened on Saturday, January 11, at the Nukiat area on the Londiani-Muhoroni road.
Tragedy struck when the bus that was reportedly travelling from Mombasa to Busia via the Londiani in the early hours of Saturday morning lost control.
According to witnesses, the driver of the bus lost control while negotiating a bend, causing the vehicle to veer off the road and land on its left side. The impact of the accident immediately claimed the lives of two adults and a child.
The accident was confirmed by area OCPD Agnes Kunga.
The injured were quickly rushed to Londiani Sub-county Hospital for urgent medical treatment.
On the other hand, the bodies of the deceased were ferried to the Londiani Mortuary for post-mortem examination.
The driver of the ill-fated bus who was arrested on the scene, was taken to the hospital for medical attention and later detained at Londiani Police Station for grilling.
The Saturday accident served as a chilling reminder of the Londiani black spot that has claimed the lives of numerous Kenyans while leaving many others scarred for life with serious injuries.
A fatal accident in Londiani in the wee hours of June 30, 2023 left over 55 people dead after a trailer rammed into several Public Service Vehicles (PSV) resulting in a multi-car crash.
The trailer rammed into seven matatus that were parked by the roadside at a pick-up stage that also hosted boda boda operators before rolling into a nearby market.
More recently, in September 2024, 13 lives were lost after a Londiani-bound lorry lost control after hitting a porthole before ramming into a 14-seater matatu that was enroute to Kisumu.
Footage circulating widely depicted the Public Service Vehicle (PSV) damaged extensively with its windows shattered and pieces of glass scattered all over the road.
Meanwhile, the lorry was damaged on its front side, with footage depicting the truck leaning on one of its sides with the windscreen completely broken.
