Residents of Nairobi, Kisumu, Kiambu, Nyeri, and Nakuru have been advised to prepare for showers over the weekend amid high temperatures in the five-day weather forecast.
The Kenya Meteorological Department forecasts that many parts of the country will remain sunny and dry, with temperatures in some parts of Nyanza expected to reach 31°C over the next five days.
The weather advisory, covering the period from Saturday, January 11, to Wednesday, January 15, 2025, outlines expectations for showers in at least 36 counties over the weekend.
The outlook for the Highlands East of the Rift Valley, including Nairobi, Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang'a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, and Tharaka, will have mainly sunny intervals with a chance of light rains over a few places in the morning.
However, The Met predicts in the afternoon and night for Saturday and Sunday. Monday to Wednesday, on the other hand, will see sunny intervals in the morning and afternoon, with nights being partly cloudy.
Temperatures are forecast to hit a high of 28°C with lows of 08°C over the five days.
Highlands West of the Rift Valley, Lake Victoria Basin, and the broader Rift Valley region—these are the counties of Kisumu, Kisii, Uasin Gishu, Nakuru, Kakamega, and Busia, among others—will experience morning rains in scattered areas, while afternoon and evening showers, including thunderstorms, are likely to intensify over several locations between Saturday and Monday.
Tuesday and Wednesday are expected to be sunny. Temperatures are forecast to hit a high of 32°C with lows of 09°C over the five days.
Coastal counties like Mombasa, Kilifi, and Kwale are set to remain mostly dry during the day, with occasional night cloudiness. Residents should brace for high daytime temperatures exceeding 32°C, particularly in some coastal, south-eastern, and northern regions.
At the same time, nights are also expected to have high temperatures hitting 24 °C.
In the south-eastern lowlands of Kitui, Makueni, Machakos, Kajiado, and Taita Taveta counties, as well as inland parts of Tana River County, Kenya Met predicts showers in the afternoon and night on Saturday and Sunday, with mornings expected to be sunny.
Kenya Met Director General Dr. David Gikungu urged residents to remain vigilant, stating, “Strong southeasterly winds exceeding 25 knots (12.5 m/s) are expected in parts of Turkana and Marsabit counties.”
