Mothers who visit the Pumwani Mertanal Hospital will enjoy improved, new, and better services after the hospital receives a Ksh100 million donation.

The funds raised through partnerships are aimed at improving facilities and services for the benefactors who use the hospital.

The facelift aims to enhance the quality of life for patients and also improve access to services.

The facelift will be done through the Rotary International Organisation and the Nairobi County. Nairobi Deputy Governor Njoroge Muchiri hailed the move saying it resonates with the country's universal Health program.

"When you look at the programs that they have lined up for us, we can only just thank them because they support our Universal Health Programm, and the patients who come here will get a much better quality of life due to the intervention," John Muchiri said.

Speaking during the hospital's centenary celebrations on the maternity hospital, Rotary International President Stephanie Urchick emphasised the need to support vulnerable populations.

"In addition to improving the quality of life, it promotes longevity, lowers health costs, and allows people to pursue their life goals.  It is a very important element of Rotary in general because we have always been involved in disease treatment and prevention," Urchick said.

The facelift that will be happening for the next two years will see the hospital benefit not only on the services but also on facilities.

The hospital will be procuring a mobile blood donation van to support the facility's capacity building. Cases of overcrowding and mothers having to share beds will be solved following this facelift.

The facelift also includes the training of community health workers to increase the capacity and flow of service delivery to patients visiting the facility. In February 2024, the hospital faced a major challenge of understaffing forcing the county government to intervene.

Founded in 1926, the hospital has had a history of lucking equipment to offer quality free delivery services to expectant mothers. Pumwani Maternity Hospital is an Obstetric and referral hospital for delivery of expectant mothers in Nairobi, and adjoining districts.

It has 354 Obstetric beds, 144 baby cots, and 2 Theatres. Daily normal deliveries are 50 – 100, and Caesarean Sections are 10 – 15.

It is equivalent to a Provincial Hospital in status and is reported to be the third busiest maternity hospital in the African continent. The facility is headed by the Deputy Medical Officer of Health (PMH) who doubles up as the Hospital CEO assisted by the Matron and the Hospital Health Administrator(Hospital Secretary).
